Open Street Map - 2006/12/08 07:58 A project that might interest a few of you here.

www.openstreetmap.org is a project to create a wiki style map of the world. The purpose of creating new maps is that they are free from copyright restrictions so you can use the maps for any purpose and you can map areas of the world that aren't currently mapped, or are out of date.
By creating a new set of maps you can also get better accuracy than a normal map, as many mapping organisations put flaws into there maps to catch out people illegally copying there maps. (easter eggs)

The website has more information on the project, and it's coming along well.

Like wikipedia or similar resources it needs contributions, both in the technology and programs the project uses and in the data.
If you have a GPS (around £50 uk pounds) you can create a track file (log of where you've been) and upload that to the servers.
If you don't have a GPS you can still help as someone may have made a track in your area and need someone to trace over the route with road names, places of interest and other details.

This is a very brief overview, but i'm sure the website is better at explaining than me. So if your interested visit www.openstreetmap.org

Daniel

PS, I think i'm getting the usual problems with logging in and user ID when posting from work, maybe theres an updated version of the forum software that fixes this? any ideas what the cause is root?
