Re: New Osdev portal - 2006/06/24 12:46 As far as I am concerned, I think the solution to the issue is a pretty simple one, but first let me detail my point of view regarding this site I run.

When Dakman showed us his English site (ww2.sysbin.com) I noted and wondered how the latest threads appeared on his Forum Monitor since the system I used at that time had no RSS support for the forums. It was clear to me that the content was scraped.

But since he only was grabbing the thread titles and rebuilding the links to OsdCom.Info, the fact of listing those entries in his Monitor was beneficial to the osdev community and therefore to this site as well. Moreover, there are no ads placed there or suspicious redirects.

This makes me feel good as web master of this site, considering it a reference website for this IT&C area and also that the osdev world is in expansion. Therefore, I do believe Dakman's intentions are genuine and I personally have no problem at all with his site. Please note they also ran a big osdev board there for the Russian speaking audience.

However, it is up to all web masters to decide which is better for them and how much content are they willing to share with the similar sites. I also believe in intellectual property and I will make sure it will be respected in the areas where I'm in control. If you ever feel this site has issues in this respect, please contact us ASAP.

In conclusion, I think it's up to Chase to decide “how much is enough” and let Dakman know. I'm also offering my support in mediating this issue.

Finally I want to add that I have no connection with Dakman or the site(s) he runs.

Re: New Osdev portal - 2006/06/24 16:44 I just would have like to been asked first. I see he announced his portal on my message boards(I didn't follow the link until now) but there was no mention of any osdev.org content in anyway. And I never recieved an email about it.

I've sent the following email to the 2 address I could find.

Hello,

I've recently came across your OSDev Portal at ww2.sysbin.com.

I've noticed 2 pages that include content from osdev.org. The first is your Forum Monitor. Looking at my server logs I see that you have been parsing the topic list of 3 of my forums every 10 minutes. Unless a website has setup some type of content syndication it is usually polite to ask if it's ok to do this first. With the latest version of osdev.org I've setup both RSS and ATOM support for my forums. My intention when setting up RSS support was mostly for end users but if you'd like to include a RSS reader of my forums on your webpage I just ask that you follow the same request I have of everyone, mainly don't make a request more then once an hour.

With my RSS feed you can choose what forums you want topic lists from so you only have to make one HTTP request and you can cache your previous results and only request new topics. Please see my post at http://www.osdev.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=675 .

The other content that came from my site is located at http://ww2.sysbin.com/index.php?module=oslist. I have discontinued that version/formatting of the project list but you can still see the source of the list located at your site by viewing my old list at http://web.archive.org/web/20030803122556/www.osdev.org/projects.jsp. I've implemented a new wiki version of the project list that is located at http://www.osdev.org/wiki/index.php/Projects. If you would like to become a mirror of the project list I wouldn't mind that as long as you add a disclaimer at the top of the page stating that you are a mirror and where the original is located at and of course don't synchronize excessively. It's best for the entire OSDev community if we try to maintain a single project list.

Thanks,
-Chase

Are you aware of any email addresses I should be trying to contact besides admin@sysbin.com and codeworld@yandex.ru?

Re: New Osdev portal - 2006/06/24 17:06 I have sent extra info I found by email to you.

BTW, the terms from the email seem pretty fair to me and most likely this will be solved out quickly.
