Bonafide forums down - 2005/03/21 21:57 Just to say that we aren't the only ones moving hosts and hoping that stops attacks on the site. Seems osdever.net has had the same problems and have taken teh forum down until they move hosts.

I wonder why they attack these kind of sites. It would make sense if OSDCOM or Bonafide would be in a conflict/competition with other sites, but that not the case, and if it was that would be 100% *NOT ETHICAL*

Re: Bonafide forums down - 2005/03/22 22:31 I know we aren't exatly an obvious type of person to go for. Maybe they are just envious of our intelligence (in which case believe me you needn't be in my case lol, my IQ's dropped with age I reckon).

Talking of which anyone else believe they used to be ok with OS programming and now coming back to it after a year feel they have forgotten everything. (Sure a year or so ago I could make a pmode bootloader in a night no problem now a few weeks and still only half way lol)

But the OSdev community isn't an obvious opinionated society. The microsoft site or political group or some such maybe. But the only general sterotypel of OS programmers is our curiosity of what happens at the lower levels of the computer.

Re: Bonafide forums down - 2005/03/23 10:48 Probably. But again this site doens't really get a huge amount of traffic as it is. But what ever the reason it's annoying what happened to going outside and meeting up with friends and extra curricular activites or work etc.

Welcome to the forum bubach. I've been to your site before actually. Quite an interesting project. I started on a real mode DOS clone for a while (with a few differences to MS-DOS standards where I got bored and felt like cutting corners etc.)
If you don't yet have the filesystem and such supported I fully recommend working on the FAT12 filesystem and the .com application type. (Then you can actually visit 256b.com and get some 3rd party programs to actually work on your OS which is quite a nice feeling lol)

If you don't yet have .com support and want any tips/help feel free to ask and I'll see if I can remember any relevant information from my real mode code.

I am currently working on implementing floppy and MM support, I think that will be the hardest, after that I'll problably have less to worry about..
I'll use FAT12 and some flat binary format...

Yeah, having programs runned in the OS must feel great! I already did some VGA testing to put a mario sprite on the screen..

Re: Bonafide forums down - 2005/03/24 08:39 Well feel free to contribute. There are a few guys who regularly visit to answer questions. VGA sounds interesting not something I've played with yet. FAT12 is really quite easy. FAT is probably among the easiest commonly supported filesystem, and OSdevers love to use floppy disks to test with (formatting a partition to test an OS for a week isn't fun).

But the flat binary format your refering to sounds a little like the .com file lol.
You can support it just by making a binary file which has the correct origin and ends either by using (I think) the 'ret' command (as a return address is pushed before the app is started) or though an interrupt. So with about 10 basic DOS interrupts and minimal hassle you can support the .com file format.

I can get some more details on it for you (not using my home computer at the moment) if you would like to support the standard.

Re: Bonafide forums down - 2005/03/25 21:15 Ah, ok. Well oddly enough when working in real mode the 64k limit never bothered me lol. Then again as my kernel was at the most only around 6k it's not surprising. I guess as soon as graphics and sounds are involved then you see the sudden rise in the size of the needed space.
