How to boot my OS - 2004/09/26 09:47 I started working, actually designing my new OS. I noted there are two popular ways of booting it. Via a custom boot script written by me or via GRUB.

What do you suggest?

Re: How to boot my OS - 2004/09/26 09:57 Hey apple!

Indeed these two options you mentioned are the most popular ones. And prolly by "boot script" you meant "boot sector".

Regarding this issue there are many articles on the Web, and in our Downlload section as well, http://www.osdcom.info/download.php?list.4

I used GRUB in the past, as it is more modular and easier to code, in fact it enables you to jump several stages you have to do while booting.

But as you're a newbie, I suggest to write your own boot sector. You may want to develop one on a raw filesystem, eg. 1st sector is the boot one, 2nd - Xth is the kernel image, or try a more complex one based on FAT12. This docs may help you: http://www.osdcom.info/download.php?view.95 and http://www.osdcom.info/download.php?view.97

Good luck!
PS: and keep asking and bringing more newbies here 8)

Re: How to boot my OS - 2005/10/22 06:45 You must write your bootsector with FS or without. It's must be a 512 bytes long. More information in www.osdever.net
