Re: Boot Sector - 2005/10/08 08:45 Hello
I'm not sure if I understood your question. Could you post some more details about your problem or example code ?

I by the way wouldn't recommend to begin operating system development with an own bootsector because it is too difficult. There are many open-source loaders that you might use to start your kernel:
John Fine
Alexei Frounze
GRUB

Re: Boot Sector - 2005/10/12 09:57 Hello,
if you simply write the bootsector to the harddisk you won't be able to use windows any longer. In case you want to do it though (on an old computer that you don't need..) you should have a look at dd or partcopy. And make a backup of your bootsector before overwriting anything..
Of course you could also install GRUB if you want to use both systems (windows and your OS) but I don't think that this is very practical as you would always have to reboot to test-run your operating system. I would therefore recommend to use bochs, which is an x86 emulator that allows you to test your operating system in windows. To create the image of your operating system that is needed by bochs you can again use partcopy or dd.
